Additions, Changes and Election Update
SBCERA is pleased to announce the following Board of Retirement updates as of July 1, 2010:
SBCERA Board of Retirement and staff welcomes the newest Retirement Board Member, Chairman of the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors, Gary Ovitt.
Ovitt was appointed to the SBCERA Board of Retirement by the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors on June 22, 2010. He will serve the remainder of the term for one of the Board’s appointed seats, which has been vacant since Jan. 1, 2010. The Board of Retirement consists of four appointed members.
On July 1, 2010, the Board of Retirement approved the addition of a new Alternate Retiree Trustee seat.
The new Alternate Retiree Trustee will be elected in the same manner as the Retiree Trustee. The Retiree Member candidate with the most votes will win the Retiree Trustee seat and the candidate with the second highest number of votes will serve as the Alternate Retiree Trustee. Once elected, the Alternate Trustee will only vote on Board related items in the absence of the Retiree Trustee. However, the alternate will have all of the same rights, privileges, responsibilities and access as the Retiree Trustee.
The SBCERA Board of Retirement will now consist of the following members: the San Bernardino County Treasurer (Ex Officio Member); four members appointed by the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors; two members elected by the SBCERA General membership; one member and one alternate member elected by the SBCERA Safety membership; one member and one alternate member elected by the SBCERA Retired membership. All members of the Board serve three-year terms.
The 2010 SBCERA Board of Retirement election will soon get underway. Three Board seats will be up for election in Dec. 2010.
In addition to the new Alternate Retiree Trustee seat, the two other seats up for election are the Board’s General Member Trustee and Retired Member Trustee seats. These seats are currently held by Dawn Stafford and Bob McDonald, respectively.
Declarations of Candidacy and procedural information will be made available by the Registrar of Voters in August. More information regarding the election will be posted in the coming months. All Board of Retirement elections are conducted by the Registrar of Voters under the Mail Ballot procedure and in accordance with the Uniform District Election Law.
